The Gran Fondo Valencia, officially known as the “Gran Fondo Internacional Marcha Ciudad de Valencia,” is a cyclosportive event held annually around the city of Valencia, Spain. While it may not have the long and storied history of some of the professional cycling races in the region (like the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana which dates back to 1929), it has quickly established itself as a significant event for amateur and cycling enthusiasts.
Here’s a summary of its history and key aspects:
- Establishment and Growth: The Gran Fondo Valencia has been running for several years and has grown in popularity, attracting both local and international participants. It’s an event “made by and for cycling lovers.”
- Focus on Participation: Unlike professional races, the Gran Fondo is a “cycling for all” event, emphasizing leisure, tourism, and the personal challenge of completing the route rather than outright competition. However, there is still timed tracking for those interested in their performance.
- Routes: The event typically offers two main routes of varying distances and difficulty, allowing cyclists of different fitness levels to participate. For the 2025 edition held on May 3rd, the routes are:
- Gran Fondo: Approximately 177 km with an ascent of around 2,033 meters. This route includes challenging mountain passes like L’Oronet, Alto Segart (a Category 1 climb featured in the Vuelta a España), and Chirivilla.
- Medio Fondo: Approximately 148 km with an ascent of around 1,474 meters. This route also features L’Oronet and Alto Segart but not the Chirivilla climb.
- Scenic Landscapes: A key feature of the Gran Fondo Valencia is its routes through the breathtaking landscapes around Valencia, including the “Huerta” (farmland), coastal areas with dunes and beaches, pine forests, and the mountainous interior.
- Start and Finish: Both routes typically start and finish in La Marina de València (Port of Valencia), next to the Veles e Vents building.
- Organization: The event is well-organized, with provisions for participant safety and enjoyment. This includes route marking, aid stations, and often an official event jersey for participants. Roads are generally open to traffic, but participants ride within a marked and controlled space.
- International Appeal: The Gran Fondo Valencia attracts a significant number of international participants, drawn by the challenging yet scenic routes and the appeal of visiting Valencia.
- Part of a Cycling Culture: Valencia has a strong cycling culture, with numerous scenic routes and a passion for the sport, making it an ideal location for a Gran Fondo event.
In summary, while not dating back as far as some other cycling events in the region, the Gran Fondo Valencia has quickly become a popular and significant event in the cyclosportive calendar, known for its challenging routes through beautiful Valencian landscapes and its welcoming atmosphere for cycling enthusiasts of all levels.
