The third stage of the Giro d’Italia 2025 took place on Sunday, May 11th, 2025.
Giro d’Italia 2025 – Stage 3 Summary: Vlorë – Vlorë (160 km)
Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia 2025, a 160km loop starting and finishing in Vlorë, Albania, proved to be a challenging day with approximately 2800 meters of elevation gain. Despite the significant climbing, the stage concluded in a brutally strong sprint won by Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek.
Here’s a summary of the stage:
- The Route: The stage featured an undulating parcours with two categorized climbs. The Shakeliës Pass (5.5 km at 4%) came relatively early in the stage. The main difficulty was the Qafa e Llogarasë (10.5 km at 7.5%), a Category 2 climb that crested with around 39 kilometers remaining to the finish. Following a descent, the final 25 kilometers were flat along the coast to the finish in Vlorë.
- The Breakaway: A breakaway group formed early in the stage and at one point held a significant advantage. However, the peloton, driven by teams looking for a stage win and protecting their general classification contenders, eventually reeled them in.
- The Qafa e Llogarasë Climb: The final climb saw some attacks, but no significant gaps opened up between the main contenders. The pace was high, making it difficult for many sprinters to stay in contention.
- The Finish: Despite the tough climbing, a reduced peloton approached the finish for a sprint. Mads Pedersen demonstrated his strength and speed, holding off Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and Orluis Aular (Movistar) to take the stage victory by half a wheel.
- Maglia Rosa: Thanks to the bonus seconds gained at the finish line, Mads Pedersen reclaimed the Maglia Rosa (pink jersey) for the overall race lead, taking it from Primož Roglič.
- Other Jerseys:
- Maglia Ciclamino (Points Jersey): Mads Pedersen also took over the points classification lead.
- Maglia Azzurra (Mountains Jersey): Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) retained the mountains classification lead.
- Maglia Bianca (Young Rider Jersey): Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) moved into the lead of the young rider classification.
