The Triathlon Bundesliga will be making its tenth appearance in Kraichgau – and, as has often been the case in previous years, will kick off the season there. On the eve of the Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau, there is traditionally a great atmosphere on the course near Ubstadt-Weiher.

The SSF Bonn Triathlon Team (women) and Team Berlin (men) ended the first races of the 1st Triathlon Bundesliga season on Saturday evening with surprising victories in the 2×2 pair relay.

For both teams it was their first ever victory in the highest German triathlon league.

The women from Bonn, who had previously not finished higher than third place, won just ahead of the defending champions and title favorites PV Triathlon TG Witten and Triathlon Potsdam.

“It’s unbelievable to have achieved this,” said Lilly-Marie Overberg, who in her first-ever Bundesliga race just managed to finish ahead of Rachel Klamer, the 2016 Olympic fourth-placer.

As the championship favorite, Witten nevertheless managed a good start to the season and remains the first contender for the title in the five-stop series. A podium finish is also a success for the Potsdam team, which started with a young squad.

The three teams had pulled away from the rest of the field at the start of the second half of the race and decided the outcome among themselves, with Overberg pulling away at the start of the run and holding on to their lead to the finish.

The race for victory in the men’s race was even closer. Berlin came out on top just ahead of championship favorites HYLO Team Saar and Metallart Team AST Süßen, who also want to have a say in the fight for the title.

Berlin’s Ben Bettin caught up with Saarbrücken’s Johannes Vogel, who had been leading for a long time, in the final meters and overcame his teammate Valentin Wernz in a tight sprint to the finish.

“It’s a special moment, I’m very happy to have won for the team,” said Bettin.

The format

In the 2×2 pairs relay, a team consists of four athletes, divided into two pairs. At least one of these pairs must reach the transition or the finish together. The distances for each pair are 375 meters swimming, 10 kilometers cycling and 2.5 kilometers running. The first team to get three athletes to the finish line wins.
