Since 2018, cycling in all its forms has been celebrated every 3 June on United Nations’ World Bicycle Day. This year, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) – the Federation’s training and education centre in Aigle, Switzerland – are proposing several events to the general public to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels around the world to get on their bikes.

The UCI and the UCI WCC have teamed up with Jolanda Neff to promote World Bicycle Day. As ambassador for the event, the Swiss athlete will address the public in a series of videos posted on the UCI’s social media channels. An accomplished mountain bike, cyclo-cross and road cycling athlete, Jolanda Neff was crowned Olympic Champion for mountain bike at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She has also claimed several titles of UCI World Champion in the discipline’s different formats: cross-country Olympic (XCO) in 2017, cross-country relay (XCR) in 2017 and 2018 and cross-country marathon (XCM) in 2016.

On an international scale, throughout the 24 hours of Tuesday 3 June, the UCI will propose a series of virtual rides on the platform – free of charge – of its partner MyWhoosh. All the rides are organised under the name World Bicycle Day Ride. To allow cyclists to participate in one or more of these rides regardless of their time zone, a start will be given every hour for 24 hours on different routes mapped out on different MyWhoosh virtual environments:

  • 0:00 (UTC): Hudariyat Octopus Loop (United Arab Emirates), 28 km with 40 m of elevation gain
  • 1:00 (UTC): Cities Loop (Australia), 25.7 km with 256 m of elevation gain
  • 2:00 (UTC): Coffee Trail (Colombia), 27.8 km with 98 m elevation gain
  • 3:00 (UTC): The 7 Gems (Saudi Arabia), 32.8 km with 206 m elevation gain
  • 4:00 (UTC): Kluisbergen (Belgium), 24 km with 138 m of elevation gain
  • 5:00 (UTC): Hikari Hills (Japan), 19.1 km with 251 m of elevation gain.

The same sequence will then be repeated from 6am until the last ride of the day (23:00 – midnight).

During the event, participants’ avatars will wear a jersey specially designed for World Bicycle Day.

Locally, the public will be invited to take part in a leisurely bike ride starting from the UCI WCC at 11:30am on 3 June. It will be possible to choose from two routes: a slightly hilly 30km circuit through the Swiss Chablais region, or a mainly flat 15km ride along the Rhône. Participants will include UCI WCC athletes as well as UCI and UCI WCC staff members. The event will be followed by a large barbecue organised by the UCI WCC restaurant, ‘Le Vélodrome’.

For more information and to register for the ride (registration closes on 30 May), please click here.

The UCI WCC will also host activities for schools in the region: a bike agility course will be offered in collaboration with the Chablais Vaud Police and Swiss Cycling, as well as introductions to BMX Racing and pump track under the supervision of instructors.

In Geneva, the UCI is organising, together with the Permanent Representation of Belgium in Geneva, the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), a short bike ride for staff from all embassies and permanent missions in the Swiss city. Starting at 9:30am, it will take participants from the United Nations in Prégny to the giant Broken Chair wooden sculpture at the Place des Nations.

More broadly, the UCI is encouraging the public to post their bike rides on social media using the tags @UCI_cycling and #WorldBicycleDay2025. It also encourages them to register for the 2025 World Bicycle Day event organised by the UCI Cycling Club on Strava in order to record their cycling activity for the day under the banner of World Bicycle Day.

UCI President David Lappartient said: “While the historic and fundamental role of the Union Cycliste Internationale is to govern, develop and promote competitive cycling, today it also includes encouraging widespread cycling for its positive effects on health, well-being and in the fight against climate change. World Bicycle Day on 3 June reminds us of these objectives and encourages as many people as possible around the world to get on their bikes. Cycling is becoming increasingly important on a global scale in addressing a range of challenges facing all countries around the world, but it is also a source of pleasure and joy. It is in this dual spirit that the UCI promotes the United Nations World Bicycle Day and encourages as many people as possible to participate.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity.
