The history of the Tour de Suisse Women is marked by two distinct periods: an initial run in the late 1990s and early 2000s, followed by a revival in recent years.
Early Years (1998-2001):
- Inaugural Race: The first women’s race, then known as “Tour de Suisse Féminin,” was held in 1998.
- First Winner: Lithuanian rider Rasa Polikevičiūtė claimed the title in the inaugural edition.
- Subsequent Editions: The race continued for three more years, with Russian cyclist Zulfiya Zabirova being a dominant force, winning in both 1999 and 2000. Kimberly Baldwin (USA) won the last edition of this initial run in 2001.
- Hiatus: After 2001, the Tour de Suisse Women went on a 20-year hiatus.
Modern Revival (2021-Present):
- Return to the Calendar: The event was restarted in 2021, held in conjunction with the men’s Tour de Suisse. This initial revived race was a two-day event.
- Growth and UCI Status:
- In 2022, the race was lengthened to four days and became part of the UCI Women’s ProSeries, a significant step up in its international standing.
- In 2023, it further elevated its status by joining the UCI Women’s WorldTour, the highest level of professional road cycling for women.
- Recent Winners (since revival):
- 2021: Lizzie Deignan (Great Britain)
- 2022: Lucinda Brand (Netherlands)
- 2023: Marlen Reusser (Switzerland)
- 2024: Demi Vollering (Netherlands)
The Tour de Suisse Women has grown considerably in recent years, attracting top international talent and establishing itself as a prominent event on the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar.
