The first stage of the Giro d’Italia 2025 took place on Friday, May 9th, 2025.
Stage 1: Durrës to Tirana (Albania) – 160 km (Hilly)
- Type: A hilly opening stage in Albania, featuring three categorized climbs. This kind of stage often favors ‘puncheurs’ (riders who excel on short, steep climbs and have a fast finish) and strong sprinters who can handle some climbing.
- Key Points:
- The route included the Gracen Climb (category 2, 13 km at 5.1%) mid-stage.
- The final part of the stage featured two ascents of the category 3 Surrel climb (6.9 km at 4.6%) within the last 40 kilometers, potentially shaking up the peloton.
- There were intermediate sprints at Papër, Elbasan, and Sauk (the latter offering time bonuses).
- The finish in Tirana was slightly downhill in the final kilometers before a flat 500-meter straight to the line.
- Winner: Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) won the stage in a hectic, high-speed bunch sprint.
- Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey): As the winner of the first stage, Mads Pedersen also claimed the first leader’s jersey of the 2025 Giro d’Italia.
- Other Jerseys:
- Maglia Ciclamino (Points Jersey): Mads Pedersen also leads the points classification.
- Maglia Azzurra (Mountains Jersey): Sylvain Moniquet (Cofidis) was the first over the Gracen Climb and wears the blue jersey.
- Maglia Bianca (Young Rider Jersey): Francesco Busatto (Intermarché-Wanty) is the best-placed young rider.
- General Classification: The top of the general classification reflects the stage result with time bonuses awarded at the finish and the bonus sprint.
- Notable Events: Juan Ayuso had an early mechanical issue but managed to rejoin the peloton.
In essence, the first stage was an aggressive affair with the climbs making it challenging for pure sprinters. Mads Pedersen proved to be the fastest at the finish, taking both the stage victory and the first pink jersey of the Giro d’Italia 2025.
