Inception (2017): The first edition of the Schleck Gran Fondo took place in 2017. After retiring from professional cycling at the end of the 2016 season, Fränk Schleck, passionate about sharing his love for the sport, decided to create a Gran Fondo event on his favorite training routes in Luxembourg. The inaugural event was a significant success, laying the groundwork for its future.
UCI Gran Fondo World Series Qualifier: From its early years, the Schleck Gran Fondo has been a qualifying event for the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. This means that participants have the opportunity to earn a spot in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, adding a competitive edge and drawing in serious amateur cyclists looking to compete on a global stage.
Growth and Popularity: The event has consistently grown in popularity, regularly selling out its registration slots. It attracts a diverse field of riders, from seasoned champions and former professionals (including Fränk’s brother, Andy Schleck, and other notable figures like Cadel Evans in past editions) to recreational cyclists looking for a challenging and enjoyable day on the bike. Courses: The Schleck Gran Fondo typically offers two main distances: a longer Gran Fondo course (around 160 km) and a shorter Medio Fondo course (around 90 km). While not featuring long mountain climbs, the courses are known for being selective with numerous shorter, punchy ascents.
