The Critérium du Dauphiné, often simply referred to as the “Dauphiné,” is one of cycling’s most prestigious and eagerly anticipated stage races. It holds a significant place in the sport’s history, especially as a crucial preparation event for the Tour de France.

Here’s a breakdown of its history:

  • Inauguration (1947): The race was first held in 1947, shortly after World War II, by a local newspaper, the Dauphiné Libéré. This newspaper served as the event’s title sponsor for many decades, which is why the race was historically known as the “Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré.” The first winner was Poland’s Edward Klabiński.
  • Purpose and Reputation: From its inception, the Dauphiné quickly established itself as a key event due to its challenging mountainous parcours, often featuring iconic climbs from the French Alps, such as Mont Ventoux, Col du Galibier, and Col de la Chartreuse. This mountainous terrain makes it an ideal testing ground for riders aiming for general classification success in the Tour de France, which follows just a few weeks later. It’s often seen as a “mini-Tour de France” in its own right.
  • Evolution of Classifications:
    • 1948: A mountains classification was added, which now rewards the leader with a polka-dot jersey.
    • 1955: A points classification was introduced, awarding a green jersey to the best sprinter.
    • Later additions included a best young rider classification (white jersey), replacing an earlier “combined” classification.
  • Organizational Changes: For many years, the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper was the sole organizer. However, in 2010, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the same company that organizes the Tour de France and many other major French cycling races (like Paris-Nice and Paris-Roubaix), took over the complete organization of the event. This change also led to the simplification of the name to simply “Critérium du Dauphiné,” as it was no longer directly tied to the newspaper.
  • Prestigious Winners: The Dauphiné has been won by many of cycling’s greatest riders, including all five-time Tour de France winners. Notable multiple winners include Nello Lauredi, Luis Ocaña, Charly Mottet, Bernard Hinault, and Chris Froome, each with three victories. Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Miguel Indurain, and Raymond Poulidor are among the other legends who have triumphed in the race.
  • Technological Testing Ground: Beyond being a proving ground for riders, the Dauphiné has also served as a critical testing ground for bike manufacturers to try out new equipment and for TV broadcasters to fine-tune their coverage in the challenging mountainous regions before the much larger spectacle of the Tour de France.

Today, the Critérium du Dauphiné remains a vital part of the UCI WorldTour calendar, continuing its tradition as a challenging and influential lead-up race to the pinnacle of professional cycling.
